Google’s Chromecast has become one of the top-selling streaming media devices. Like the Roku and Amazon Fire Stick, it allows users to stream video over Wi-Fi, providing access to services like Netflix and Hulu. Unbeknownst to many users, however, Chromecast also supports Android device mirroring. This feature allows Android users to stream their device’s display to their Chromecast, essentially turning their TV into a large Android display. So, how do you cast your Android device to your Chromecast?
As explained by CNET, you’ll need to download the Google Home app on your Android device to mirror the display to your Chromecast. This app is available free to download on Google Play.
Next, you’ll need to check your Android device to ensure it’s running Android version 4.4.2 or newer. To see what version of Android your device is running, access Settings > About Phone > Android version.
As long as your device is running Android 4.4.2 or newer, you can proceed to mirror the display by launching the Google Home app and clicking “Cast Screen/Audio.” The app will automatically search for compatible devices, at which point you can click your Chromecast device and begin mirroring.
Some Android devices also support quick mirroring. This alternative method involves accessing your device’s quick settings — swipe down from the top of your display — and choosing “Cast Screen.”
Regardless of which method you use, your Chromecast will display everything that’s on your Android device. This means you can use your Chromecast to browse photos, watch videos, play movies purchased on your Android device and more. With a little work, you can even set up your Android device as a video game console.
To stop mirroring, launch the Google Home app and tap the Chromecast device to which your Android device is connected. You can also change the volume of your mirror by accessing the Chromecast device in your Google Home app and moving the slider button to the left or right.
It’s recommended that you use your Wi-Fi when casting your Android device to your Chromecast. Although it supports 3G and 4G connectivity, streaming media will consume a significant amount of data. And if your wireless carrier limits the amount of data you can download per month, this may cause you to hit your cap.
