By default in the Windows 10 operating system, all folders will be displayed with a simple yellow icon when browsing file structures in the Windows Explorer tool. However, users have the ability to customize the icon for individual folders to make them stand out from other content. Windows 10 includes a number of folder icon alternatives, but users can also import their own icons as well.
Step 1:
Open a new Windows Explorer window from the Start menu or a desktop icon.
Step 2:
Navigate to the location, either on your local hard drive or a network drive, which contains the desired folder.
Step 3:
Right-click on the folder icon or folder name and choose “Properties” from the contextual menu that appears. A pop-up window will open with several taps that contain various information related to the selected folder, including its size, extension, and security details.
Step 4:
Go to the “Customize” tab at the top of the pop-up window.
Step 5:
Click the “Change Icon” button in the “Folder Icons” section of the window. Another window will appear with a grid of different icon images that can be selected.
Step 6:
Choose one of the icon images from the grid or else click the “Browse” button and choose a custom icon of your own. Note that you can only select images in the .ico or .icl format or a .dll collection of image files.
Step 7:
Click the “OK” button in each of the pop-up windows to save the setting and change the icon for the folder.
After changing the icon for a folder in Windows 10, you can always go back to the “Properties” area and click the “Restore Defaults” button to switch back to the normal yellow folder icon. More information on this process can be found on the Microsoft support website.
