Interesting news related to Android comes out of China. Chinese phones will be receiving Android P long before consumer electronics giant Samsung does. Normally, news of this nature would be somewhat mundane. Various reasons exist why one company — or several companies — gains a strategic and competitive edge over another. What makes this news report somewhat interesting is the fact that a number of the Chinese phones lack the capability to run Google Apps. That does make the phone manufacturer’s early receipt of Android P somewhat curious.

Google plans a big rollout for Android P — also known as Android 9.0 — and wants developers and consumers to give it a test run. Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus can now join the debut party. The inclusion of these China-based companies seems odd considering they not only don’t come with Google services, some cannot even run them. Not providing Samsung with a preview can be deemed even more shocking in light of how many Android devices the company produces.

Could Google be doing this as a means of boosting sales in the Chinese market? That just might be the case. Apple’s fortunes may be motivating the possibility of such a decision.

Apple appeared to be suffering from heavy losses due to the perceived lack of interest in the iPhone X. Eventually, word hit the financial press that the iPhone X sold huge in China. Apple’s stock soared once this news became public information. Google clearly seems to be valuing the Chinese market and sees billions of dollars in potential revenue there.

If Google apps don’t play well — or at all — on the newly-minted phones, wouldn’t that lead to bad public relations for Android in China? Any bad news can lead to equally bad public relations. Brands might suffer serious harm as a result. Google appears willing to take the risk. Considering the huge potential windfall success in China could bring, the risks may be worth it.
