As smartphone users, we are constantly inundated with messages about software updates. Many of us ignore these update notifications or put off updating our phones for as long as possible. However, it is important to keep your Android phone up-to-date for several reasons. Below are some of these.

Prevents Malware and Other Security Threats

By running the latest software, you decrease the chances of your phone becoming infected with malware or other security threats. These threats can come from various sources, such as malicious apps, websites, or even text messages.

Malware can steal your personal information or hold your phone for ransom. In some cases, it can even make your phone unusable.

Some of the most common malware threats will try to trick you into giving them access to your personal information. They may do this by posing as a legitimate app or website. Once they have your information, they can use it to commit fraud or identity theft.

Allows You to Take Advantage of New Features and Improvements

In addition to security fixes, each new software update usually comes with new features and improvements. For example, Android Oreo (8.0) brought improvements to battery life, notification controls, and picture-in-picture mode.

Similarly, Android Pie (9.0) introduced a new gesture-based navigation system, Adaptive Battery power saving mode, and Digital well-being tools.

Fixes Bugs and Other Issues

Like any piece of software, Android is not perfect. With each new update, Google works to fix any bugs that have been discovered.

For example, the Android Oreo update fixed Bluetooth connections, battery life, and Wi-Fi connectivity issues. The Android Pie update fixed issues with screen rotation, camera crashes, and more.

Keeps Your Phone Supported

Google typically supports each major Android version for at least two years. This means that they will continue to release security patches and other updates during that time.

However, once Google stops supporting a particular version of Android, your phone will no longer receive any updates. This leaves your phone vulnerable to security threats.

Updating your Android phone is important for security, bug fixes, and new features. However, it is also important to remember that each new update comes with its own set of advantages and problems. Be sure to read reviews and do your research before updating your phone.
