Motorola’s flagship Android One smartphone, the Motorola One, is coming to the United States. According to The Verge, the American telecommunications company will begin selling the Android One exclusively at Best Buy stores throughout the United States beginning Nov. 11.
The Motorola One was first released in India on Oct. 5. Until recently, it was unknown whether Motorola would offer the Android-powered handset in other regions. Earlier this month, however, Motorola confirmed that consumers in the United States can soon purchase the Motorola One at Best Buy for $399. The U.S. retailer will begin selling the Motorola One in its stores on Nov. 11, but consumers can get their hands on a black-colored variant of the handset as early as Nov. 9 by ordering it on Best Buy’s website.
What is the Motorola One exactly? The Motorola One is the first smartphone in Motorola’s lineup that’s powered by the default, unmodified version of Google’s Android mobile operating system. All Android smartphones feature the Android operating system. Android One smartphones like the Motorola One, however, run the original version of Android, meaning it hasn’t been changed by the device manufacturer.
Android One smartphones typically perform better than smartphones running modified versions of Android. When a manufacturer uses a modified version of Android, it may inadvertently introduce new bugs or compatibility issues. For consumers, this means more random reboots, more apps randomly closing and slower processing speeds. The Motorola One will likely avoid these technical problems by using the unmodified version of Android.
The Motorola One is powered by some top-notch hardware. Reports show that it features a 5.9-inch display, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage space, a 13-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel secondary camera. Perhaps the Motorola One’s most impressive feature, though, is its water-resistant coating. Motorola says its new Android One smartphone features a coating of nano particles that repels water, oils and other liquids. The Motorola One isn’t waterproof, but its nano coating offers a stronger level of protection from moisture-related damage.
The Motorola One is expected to work with all GSM carriers in the United States, including AT&T and T-Mobile. It will not work with CDMA carriers, such as Sprint, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular.
