Less than two months ago, a senior Samsung executive was sent to prison after the South Korean courts proved that he had been involved in corruption. Things are getting out of control for the family that controls Samsung as its being accused of white-collar crime. The charges this time involve the company’s patriarch known as Lee Kun-hee. Mr. Lee is being investigated by the Korean police whether he might have used part of his company’s money to renovate the family’s home. This is the sole reason why the construction arm of the company was attacked by police on Wednesday. Reports have emerged that investigations involving other people will begin soon. This will involve questioning Samsung officials. The construction arm that was attacked by the police is Samsung C&T Corporation. Through their spokesman, the arm said that it could not comment on the issue referring to an ongoing police investigation. However, the arm has in the past said that the allegations are false and without basis. A police officer who spoke about the issue and sought for anonymity also refused to confirm the amount of money that might have been involved in the deal. This investigation comes two months after Lee Jae-yong was imprisoned. He still maintains the position of vice chairman of Samsung Electronics.
However, the 49-year-old is appealing the conviction. He is currently serving a five-year prison term after investigators proved that he was involved in bribery. This latest raid only intensifies the uncertainty that has befallen Samsung in the last few months. At the moment, Samsung is the largest company in South Korea. However, despite the troubles, its business is running without any problems. Samsung produces a number of products and services that include insurance, drugs, memory chips and smartphones. The legal troubles surrounding Samsung is a reflection of the anger that people have on Samsung officials who have been handed lighter sentences. On other occasions, the officials have even being pardoned. The country lawmakers have also spoken about the issue. One of the latest politicians to address the issue is Democratic Party member Park Yong-jin. This is a leader who has always spoken out against South Korea corporate culture. He mentioned that the deal denied the country the opportunity to benefit from the $2 billion tax that would have arisen. In the year 2008, Lee Byung – chull, the founder of the company was accused of avoiding taxes.
