Beginning with the release of the iPhone 5S, Apple added a new feature to their smartphone lineup known as Touch ID. It added a new layer of security to the devices, as users could now unlock their phone by scanning their fingerprint on the home button instead of using a standard passcode. Touch ID has continued to evolve and now supports multiple fingerprints on a single iPhone device.

Step 1:

Go to the “Settings” application from your iPhone’s main homescreen.

Step 2:

Select the “Touch ID & Passcode” row from the list of settings. A prompt will appear and ask you to enter your six-digit numeric passcode. Without this passcode, you cannot make changes to Touch ID settings.

Step 3:

Scroll down to the “Fingerprints” section of the screen and tap on the “Add a Fingerprint” option.

Step 4:

Press the desired finger to the surface of the home button and then lift it off of the button. The Touch ID guide may prompt you to perform this multiple times as it scans your full fingerprint.

Step 5:

Change your physical grip of the iPhone and then tap the “Continue” button.

Step 6:

Continue to press your finger to the home button until all edges of your fingerprint have been accepted by the scanner.

Step 7:

Tap “Continue” once the Touch ID guide confirms that your fingerprint has been successfully stored. A sequential number will automatically be assigned to your new fingerprint.

Step 8:

Tap on the number of the new fingerprint to set a custom name for it. Tap “Done” when you are finished.

Touch ID allows you to store ten separate fingerprints per device. You can remove a fingerprint record at any time by tapping on its name and choosing the “Delete Fingerprint” option. For more information on Touch ID, consult the Apple support website.
