Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) remains an important security measure for consumers. These days, most people use 2FA on a regular basis to log into their accounts. A user signs into their account and receives a text message with a code. That code is required to provide full access to a given account. Fortunately, 2FA is employed for everything from online banking to credit card logins and even Google accounts.

Google Introduces A Useful Feature To Android Messages

Speaking of Google, the company released an important update to Android Messages. An updated version of the app allows users to copy 2FA codes from the actual notification. At the tap of a button, the code is copied to a smartphone’s clipboard. Users can then paste the code in the app or website they’re trying to access. This is a simple change to Android Messages, but it provides an incredible level of convenience.

This ability for two-factor authentication codes is smart on Google’s part. When a notification arrives, most people try to memorize the code and input it. Forgetting the code or making an error is time-consuming because the code is reset. From there, users must wait for another code to arrive on their phone. If a user misses the code too many times, he or she could lose access to their account, requiring extra steps to rectify.

When Will Smartphone Owners Have This Feature?

The update to Android Messages may or may not hit a given device. For now, it appears as though Google is reserving this function for devices running Android P. Since Android P is only available in Developer Preview versions, most users won’t receive the update yet. An official release of Android P should give this feature to every Android smartphone running Android Messages. Regardless, this is a welcome addition to the app.

The Importance of 2FA For Smartphone Users

Some sites require two-factor authentication at all times. Other sites make this security feature optional, but every user should take advantage of 2FA. With one extra step, users provide themselves with an effective layer of security. Codes sent to a smartphone ensure that only authorized users can access the account in question. 2FA is a proven method to prevent users from having their accounts compromised today.

Google’s addition to Android Messages is a simple but convenient feature. Unfortunately, users on a non-Android smartphone or a PC won’t be able to use this solution. Similar options may be available on other platforms, though. Anyone not using two-factor authentication is urged to utilize this security feature immediately.
