Applying technology in the Russia-Ukrainian War has been a huge factor in the Ukrainian conflict. Russian forces have used drones and cyber warfare to infiltrate the Ukrainian military’s networks. This war is not one whose outcome will be decided with bullets and swords. The best way for the US and European states to stop this war from escalating further would be to impose economic sanctions on Russia, which might finally force Moscow into negotiations with Kiev.

The Russian Army has used drones to observe the progress of their artillery strikes, and even during the early stages of the war, it was clear that Russia had been using drones for surveillance. The same kind of mini-drones was also mass-produced in Russia and given to pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine. Igor Sutyagin, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London, “mini-UAVs,” are an increasingly important weapon in modern warfare. Russia is developing this technology to save costs and make more use of unmanned technology. Russia is also trying to establish a military doctrine that embraces new technology, like self-guided “smart” weapons. In detail, he said that Russia’s defense industry is competing with Western nations in developing cyber-warfare capabilities, including those of drones and “unmanned systems.” The Russian Army has already developed several UAV models, including the Orlan-10 and Forpost. The Orlan-10 drone is designed for reconnaissance, and it is capable of flying at an altitude of 5km for 12 hours. The Forpost, on the other hand, has an altitude of 4km and can stay in the air for 8 hours during the day and night. This drone has a flight range of 150 kilometers.

In addition to drones, cyber warfare is another form of technology that Russia has used to invade Ukraine. The Russian Army has worked hard to infiltrate the networks of the Ukrainian Army. They can see what weapons the army has, what kind of troop and vehicle movements they make, and even how long Ukrainian soldiers take for a break. Russia has also used cyber warfare to cause damage to Ukrainian military facilities. In May, Russia shut down power in Ukraine, which led to outages in ATMs and blackouts in government offices. According to CBS News, the Russians could do this by gaining access to a Ukrainian transmission station and then turning off the power. Ukraine’s military intelligence announced that Russian hackers have recently hacked into their network and stolen secret information about Ukrainian troops. US General Philip Breedlove said that “hackers in a uniform of the Russian Federation” have used methods like “Trojan horses or some other kind of malicious software.”
