Android users are getting a Qualcomm-backed upgrade in 2018. The company released the newest iteration of its system on a chip, upgrading Snapdragon 835 with Snapdragon 845. The Android market is expected to embrace Snapdragon 845 with smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, LG, HTC, Google and Sony showing interest. Though new smartphone models have yet to be unveiled, tech insiders believe that OnePlus 6, ZTE Nubia Z 18, Sony Xperia XZ Pro-A, and others will also employ Snapdragon 845. It is anticipated that Motorola smartphones will feature the design in 2019.

Snapdragon 845 promises to perform well. The SoC processes AI faster than other versions and boosts overall CPU and GPU performance. Image quality is also improved, with ultra-high definition video capture capabilities and 10-bit color depth that captures, according to sources, “over one billion colors.”

In terms of speed, Snapdragon’s high-capacity memory does not drain the battery. The system operates on Low Power Plus FinFet technology, which translates to a 30 percent power reduction for video. This improvement makes sense considering how the new features are geared toward video capture, with MCTF video capture, ImMotion computational video, deep portrait imaging, spectra camera modules and depth-based facial recognition among a few of the visual upgrades.

If this seems like a lot of features for a handheld device, then you can expect to find the same SoC on tablets, laptops and other devices as well but it isn’t clear when those developments could take place.

In his article in Forbes, Marco Chiapetta of Hothardware.com makes it clear that other than Samsung’s official interest, other manufacturers have not made official announcements regarding the SoC that is set to power their mobile devices. However, if the success of Snapdragon 835 is setting a precedent, then it is highly likely these suspicions will play out. Of course, no one will know for certain until the products are unveiled. But with CES 2018 right around the corner, Android users will soon find out what new features they can enjoy in the new year.
