Have you found an old computer and do not know what to do with it? If you have an old computer that does not work, it does not need to stay that way. Restoring a computer is a relatively easy task if you follow these steps:

Step 1: Walk around the computer and pay attention to any defects in the casing or machine itself. Ask yourself about the condition of the computer. How old is this machine? When was it last turned on? Is the fan broken? Are there any parts missing? Is there any apparent damage to the USB ports? Does it have a hard drive?

Step 2: Try to start up the machine. Press and hold the power button and listen for any noise coming out of the machine. If the machine starts up normally, you are in good shape. If you hear any screeching, beeping, thumping, scratching, or crackling noises, there is likely a part (or a few) that need replacing. If you hear disks whine during startup, that is usually good news.

Step 3: Shut the computer off and open the case. Even if you had success in the previous step, open the case. You will need to get close to the internal parts. If your machine didn’t power on after several attempts, take a look at the power connectors running from the PSU to the motherboard. If they are connected properly, then you likely have a motherboard or PSU issue.

Step 4: Clean the inside of the case. While the computer was not in use, dust probably got into some of the internal parts. You can use compressed air to weed out the dust and other harmful materials. You want to make sure that the motherboard, cards, disk drives, power supply, any fans are all clean.

Step 5: Replace any parts that are no longer functioning. Parts like the sound card, graphics, and the battery can easily be upgraded.

Step 6: Upgrade the performance of your computer. Even if you get your old computer up and running, it will likely be slow with inconsistent processing speeds. Consider a RAM upgrade, hard disk(s), if possible, upgrade from CD-ROM to DVD, and add gigabit ethernet or a wi-fi card.

Step 7: Install an operating system. After you get all the broken parts fixed, it is time to install a modern operating system. A modern operating system will have more features and better security. For a more detailed look, click here.
