There were many years when Netflix was not taken very seriously by the Hollywood establishment. Those days are gone forever. The streaming giant has produced a lot of outstanding movies and shows that have garnered critical acclaim. Original Netflix shows and movies have received a lot of nominations for the Golden Globe awards that will be handed out soon. HBO is the other company that received a lot of Golden Globe nominations for their original content. Netflix is no longer ridiculed as being a company that relies on the content of others to survive. Movies like “The Two Popes” and “Marriage Story” could end up being very big winners this awards season.

It is not a surprise that Netflix is churning out very high quality content. They know this is the only way they are going to survive. The streaming wars have already begun. The competition among streaming companies to attract subscribers is going to be fierce. Netflix knows it is going to lose a lot of the biggest movies and shows it has licensed. It has already lost “Friends” and it will soon lose “The Office.” Original programs are eventually going to be the majority of what Netflix has to offer to all of its millions of subscribers. Therefore, they had better be good.

Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” will most likely be the movie that will dominate the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards this year. Scorsese made the movie for Netflix because they were the only company that was willing to pay the film’s very hefty budget. Netflix has shown a willingness to spend money in a way that the other major movie studios will not. That has allowed the streaming company to attract many of the biggest names in show business to their platform.

Hollywood knows that Netflix is a major player now. The level of respect for what they do has gone up tremendously over the past five years. There is no reason to think that is going to change any time soon. Netflix has Disney breathing down their neck. The pressure is very great for Netflix. They are well aware that many of their subscribers will cancel their service and sign up with Disney or some of the other streaming services if the quality of their content takes a dip. They cannot afford to let that happen. It will be interesting to see how they fare at the Golden Globes.
