Cell phone giant T-Mobile is going all in on home internet service. Known as T-Mobile Home Internet, the company is getting the word out through an edgy ad campaign aimed at people tired of dealing with expensive providers and data cap limits. It appears that the ads are working. In just over a year, T-Mobile Home Internet has gone from a test program to a service available to 40 million homes.

T-Mobile Home Internet is not the typical internet service provider. Instead of using coaxial cable lines, fiber or DSL to bring broadband connectivity into the home, T-Mobile uses wireless 5G cellular technology. This also opens the world of high-speed internet to a new group of customers living in rural areas. In fact, over 10 million homes in the rural United States have access to the service.

T-Mobile Home Internet’s price is another key selling point. The service is only $50 per month. This is lowered to $30 for certain mobile customers. Also gone are data caps and contracts. This means customers can use as much internet as they want without worrying about overages and fees. There are also no equipment fees or startup costs for users.

Customers receive a Wi-Fi Gateway. The gateway serves as both a modem and router. Average download speeds come in at 33 megabits per second but can reach much higher speeds in some areas. It is important to note that this is much slower than the gig speeds offered by many traditional broadband providers.

There are, however, some considerations customers must understand with the service. While T-Mobile Home Internet is expanding, there are still lots of places that cannot receive the service. Additionally, while 5G is the ideal technology for customers, many areas still rely on 4G LTE. This means slower service for some users. In fact, T-Mobile is the slowest of 5G home internet providers.

Overall, the service is a great option for those who previously had no access to high-speed internet and those who dislike cable companies. T-Mobile Home Internet sometimes offers promotions and always promises no hidden fees. While not the fastest service, T-Mobile Home Internet provides plenty of speed for most people.
