Twitter has reported that it’s suspending the right wing theorist, Alex Jones, from posting on his Twitter platform for a week. Twitter noted that Alex Jones’ past tweets would remain viewable to the public. His account will be switched to a read-only mode. So far, the technology company has not announced what had triggered their decision. However, it seems that the action was prompted by the recent demand by the public to erase the InfoWars boss’ account permanently.
According to Variety.com, Alex Jones had tweeted a link to a clip in which the theorist referred to his followers to be ready with their battle rifles. Twitter Company said that the statement was a clear violation of their set principles.
The company couldn’t condone such abusive behavior. The restriction was originally the only operative on the InfoWars boss’s official account, @Real AlexJones. The account is said to have more than 890,000 followers. This is a significant number of followers. If the followers were influenced to take part in violent activities, it would be chaotic. As a result, Twitter took it upon themselves to reduce the impact of Jones’ posts
Mr. Jones had posted in a video with a discussion on a move to another @InfoWars feed that had about 431,000 followers. Jones described this as a sub-account. Twitter also locked the sub-account that he was referring to into a read-only mode. Jack Dorsey, the Twitter Chief Executive, noted that Alex Jones had been placed on a ‘timeout’. A particular news anchor suggested to Dorsey that the seven-day timeout was a very lenient punishment. Perhaps, he would have been given a tougher punishment. This would be in the form of a suspension of a year or even several months.
The Twitter chief executive noted that the intensity of the punishment did not matter, may it be temporary or permanent. The little day’s suspension was enough to make Jones rethink about his previous actions. The new anchor posted a question to Dorsey asking him if he thought that Jones was going to tone down his rhetoric, especially after the seven days suspension. The Twitter chief executive noted that he was not in a position to know whether Jones will reform. However, he insisted that the action that was taken was company policy. Alex Jones has for a long time now been criticized for repeating the attacks that were staged in New York by the United States government.
