With most wireless carriers limiting the amount of high-speed 5G LTE data customers can use, many people use their device’s Wi-Fi when browsing the internet and downloading files. But Wi-Fi is also susceptible slow speeds, especially if the device has a weak signal. If you struggle to get decent speeds with your Android device’s Wi-Fi, consider the five following tips to improve its Wi-Fi signal.

#1) Change Frequency Band

Changing the frequency band of your device’s Wi-Fi can improve slow speeds attributed to network congestion. When too many devices on a network use the same band, it causes congestion. Therefore, it’s recommended that you change your device’s frequency band by accessing Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced Settings > Wi-Fi Frequency Band. If it’s currently in 2.4 GHz, switch it to 5 GHz.

#2) Increase Range

Android’s default Wi-Fi settings has a pretty low range. You can increase it, however, by making a few changes to your device. Systweak Software explains that once developer mode has been enabled, you can change your device to “Aggressive Wi-Fi” mode, after which it will have an extended Wi-Fi range.

#3) Move Closer to the Router

The distance between your Android device and the router to which it is connected will affect it’s Wi-Fi signal. The farther away, the weaker your device’s Wi-Fi. By moving your Android device closer to your router, you’ll experience faster speeds and improved connection reliability.

#4) Update Software

Make sure your Android device’s firmware is up to date. It’s outdated, it may contain technical bugs that affect Wi-Fi performance. You can check your device’s firmware by accessing Settings > About Phone > Check for Update.

#5) Wi-Fi Analyzer App

Finally, consider downloading and using a Wi-Fi analyzer app on your Android device. There are dozens of Wi-Fi analyzers available on the Play Store. At minimum, these apps will reveal the congestion levels of channels, allowing you to choose the least-congested frequency band.

While these tips can improve the Wi-Fi strength of Android devices, other factors play a role in Wi-Fi speed and performance as well. If the internet connection powering your Wi-Fi is slow, all devices connected to the network will experience the same slow speeds. So, consider all possibilities when diagnosing slow Wi-Fi speeds on your Android device.
